Fire and Nice

If you're wondering why I don't post much anymore, it's probably because I'm convinced that no one reads this thing anymore. It's the same reason why I just don't like Facebook much either, since everyone bailed as soon as their moms joined. Part of the fun of a blog is response and reaction to the things I write or say, and since I don't get much, it's hard to care.

This is not a chastisement. I'm pretty sure I don't get comments because there's no one to comment, not because my few readers are all android automatons with no opinions; I'm pretty sure that's already been decided...

But for the three of you still looking at this blog, here's some tiny bits of info. And for those of you who "just don't have the time" or "hate to type in my URL because I just don't want to add another bookmark to my bookmarks menu", please remember this is the year 2009, and that Google Reader exists to eliminate any and all unneccessary clicking and typing. (And yes, that was a chastisement).

UPDATE: It has occurred to be that Google Reader's inability to allow you to make comments whilst reading from their website, or from your iGoogle page could be another factor... If so, then you are forgiven. Kinda...

- I've been sick for the past two weeks with various ailments. First it was a cold/flu thing that was mild, but annoying. Then, this lovely lump decided to make a cameo on the back of my neck and pester me with irritable to the touch pain and an ever increasing sense of "oh crap! Everyone is looking at the lump on my neck!" I did the research, and it seems to be a lymph node, loaded with toxins. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone with medical knowledge better than Google...

- Saw Where The Wild Things Are two weeks ago, and loved it. I've defended it adamantly from the many naysayers who proclaim it is too scary or too "out there" for children. Yeah, it's not an easy film, but neither is Bambi, or The Dark Crystal, or Babe: Pig in the City, or The Black Stallion, but all of those films are memorable childhood favorites, and I can't wait to share them with my children. We underestimate our children's ability to "get it", and while it is up to every parent to know what media their child is watching, I do think those who wrote the film off from frame one need to re-evaluate. I could go on, but I won't. Apparently, "it's just a stupid movie" (direct quote. To me. From someone I don't know. On Facebook. See why I hate it?)

- Also saw The Box. Another challenging film, but not super fantastic. It's got a Donnie Darko sensibility, but without a lot of the heart. The mystery of the film is almost imperceptible at first glance (or possibly the third or fourth), but like Darko, I think there's something there. The overall arc is easy enough to follow, so no complaints there: it's just the broader moments (and the most bizarre) that still haven't quite been cracked. Most people will hate it, so don't take this as a "you'll love it" kind of recommend; it asks a lot of its audience (a LOT), and it gives very little back in return, so keep that in mind. If you're familiar with Richard Kelly, you can stomach it. If not, skip it. Or see it on TNT.

- I could also talk about Paranormal Activity, but what else can I say? It's freaky. It makes you question your own sanity as you walk down the dark hall to your bedroom, and especially as you fall asleep. I would have loved for the film to stick to its "fly on the wall" camera for most of it, but I suppose that film wouldn't have made $90 million at the box office... And, it could have been boring...

- I think I'm gonna get married in 2010. I'm accepting any applications starting next Thursday.

- I've been working the SDSU football games again. This year, I hate it even more. It pays well, so I stick to it, but I just can't abide that lifestyle. TV Sport production is a lot of work for very little reward, and so I just can't care that much. I do enjoy sitting in the truck during games, but so far, I haven't done that this year. I dunno. It gets a big fat LAME-O from this guy...

- I don't hate movies anymore. How's that for change?

- I say this all the time, but I'm trying to do better at this writing thing. And when I say that, I mean actually having a writing plan and a schedule. It's not easy. I've never been one for schedules, so its a stretch to believe that I'll be able to follow one. But, I need to. It hasn't quite hit me yet, but I'm sure I'll realize just how important having a lot of scripts written is very soon.

- For those who didn't know, I wrote a 30 Rock spec this last year that managed to be somewhat successful at the WB Writer's Workshop competition/application (what do you call it?). They were pleased to inform me that my script was in the top 5% out of about 1400 scripts, which is pretty decent. It wasn't good enough for their finals, but when has that ever mattered, right?

- I have a headache right now. How's that for up-to-the-minute!? It's gettin' like Twitter up in here!

- Speaking of Twitter, I'm beginning to prefer it as my means of social networking. I'm @bacoby13, in case you care.

- Google Wave, when used properly, is every bit as awesome as it's been hyped up to be. A must use with friends, colleagues and writing partners. Thanks to Jessica Lindsey Kendrick for the invite, courtesy of her husband, Arthur.

- I'm applying to grad schools. I think. I'm almost convinced of this. I need to be more convinced of this, as most of the deadlines are December 1st. And no, it's not law school. If you can talk me down from this, go ahead. I'm very much on the fence.

Later, gator-haters.

I still read every post on your blog, although I don't know if I'm one of the people that you would care to read your blog (for some reason that doesn't sound right). And, most of the time, I don't comment because I don't know enough about what you are talking about, so, for fear of sounding stupid, I say nothing.

I'm terrible at commenting, probably because I really AM an automaton with no opinion...or what opinions I do have I keep to myself in case someone should offer an opposing one. It's a problem, but what can I say?

Also, good for you for the whole grad school thing! And for the top 5% 30 Rock thing also. You're an amazing writer. I will eat my Christmas sweater collection in its entirety if you don't make it big.

Lastly, I, too, loved WTWTA, and congratulations on your pending marriage.

Don't feel guilty, folks for not commenting. I have Google Analytics, so I know when people read. I'm just making excuses... It is fun to read comments, tho... It helps serve my every expanding ego...

what up! looks like you have more then 3 that are reading your blog. i'm the 4th comment! i'm sure you have many more that blog stock you and don't comment.
i hope you figure out what that lump is on your neck, and i hope you get feeling better. let us know!
by the way, i don't really comment because half the stuff you say i don't quite understand, but i do still read your blog and get a kick out of it.
love, your couz!

Agreed on the commenting. I suffer the same thing on my blog. I know people are reading, but it's nice to have feedback. It makes it more of a forum and a discussion instead of a lecture.

Here are my responses to your updates:

- Sorry you're sick. Hope it's not cancer.

- Where The Wild Things are is pretty fantastic, and I agree whole heartedly about it not being too scary. The movies you bring up are perfect examples (I loved The Dark Crystal). I always bring up Roald Dahl as a writer who doesn't talk down to kids. Kids really do appreciate that.

- Kelly is an interesting director. I think that Donnie Darko is a pretty cool film, but the more I hear him talk about it or read about it or actually get an understanding as to what he was going for, I like it less. Southland Tales suffered from this even moreso. He's so arrogant and his film making reeks of this. Hopefully The Box is better, though I'm not going to pay 8.50.

- I loved Paranormal Activity... really smart film making. Makes us wish we thought of it first sort of a thing.

- I'm already married, otherwise I'd apply.

- Football is teh sux.

- Good. Me either.

- I'm trying to write more too, but it's hard. Eric and I have a pact to write 1 page a day, and that totally helps. You should try.

- Read your spec. Would love to give you feedback sometime.

- I do not have a headache right now.

- Mine is @Spenturion, but you know that.

- I totally <3 Google Wave so very very much. It's great. So nice to collaborate on it. (I added some stuff to our wave that you should check out)

- I would apply if I was more motivated and less poor.

Whew. That was a lot.

I'm going to post comments to every one of these here, but know that I would have preferred them sprawled out over the last two weeks because I have missed you're blog. Although discussions on Wave have been all too fun.

I will also reply to Spencer's replies in parenth's ().

I would just like to say that I comment 98% of the time, so I'm guessing you're not talking about me.
(Discussions make it much easier than posting a lecture-like review and not knowing if you're right).

Google Reader is my homeboy.

Being sick totally sucks. I was sick yesterday and I didn't get anything done...although I did watch four eps of Lost and The Road Warrior, so that counts for something.
(I hope it's not cancer as well, Jacob should get that checked).

WTWTA is now on my top ten list of favorite movies so far in my life.
(Roald Dahl is like my most favorite childhood author, I read Matilda like 80 times).

I look forward to seeing The Box, but mostly because I'm intrigued.
(Two things will stop me from seeing this movie - Kelly's crazy ass and those fake southern accents... what up with that?!)

Love Paranormal Activity.
(You should have been more scared of this.)

If gay marriage and polygamy were legal, I would apply. Do you accept referrals though?
(Sicko.)

Football Sucks.
(Football does suck.)

I'm glad you're out of the "hate movies" phase, it was a color that did not suit you.
(You should never have encouraged this.)

Writing a page a day is taxing and rewarding. And you could have so much material done that when the agents and managers start calling - which they will - you will be ready.
(I like writing.)

Congrats again on the WB thing. I believe it's just called "Writer's Workshop" as in, if you get in they just workshop you to death for two months and then turn you loose. The Disney one is a fellowship, so is the Nicholl's contest, but those both have prize money for the winners.
(You slacker.)

I am getting a headache from my neck nerves being pinched. I think I'm sleeping on my pillow funny.
(Good.)

I'm @Splanderson, but that's irrelevant unless some of your followers are like "I wonder what Jacob's friend Eric's Twitter moniker is?" But I doubt that will happen.
(I knew that.)

Google Wave = Yay!
(Where did you get your invite and why didn't you tell me about it?)

Grad school will do absolutely NOTHING for you. It's what people do when they don't know how to get what they want. Now, I'm not saying it wouldn't be fun/educational, but what I am saying is that you have the same amount of chances selling a script in that time. So work on the screenplay and earning money so you can move to LA. Keep your money because it is no good spent at University.
(Don't bother, keep the money, get rich, go back and receive honorary degrees for being awesome.)

I don't hate Gators.
(That was a lot.)

Hey! Marry Hayley. Ha ha ha. I'm reading your blog in the middle of a class at grad school. And I think, though I'm sort of bored stiff right at this minute as far as class goes, I would totally encourage grad schoolness. And please keep blogging.

Congrats on the spec, that is so cool!

Write a kids show with me. I finally figured out what it is, how I see it ( and I hate to do this but i will anyways) is it is a combo of Babe, Pushing Daises and Julia Child.

Go with grad school if it feels good. I don't see how it could do any harm, and if it will make you happy, do it, do it, do it!

Just think, this time last year we were sick of Prop 8. Now we are sick with swine flu. Connection...? I have no idea what that means. I've been alone with two crying kids all day.

Why can't I finish this post?

My 3 year old enjoyed WTWTA--although some of the themes were a bit over his head, he was engaged the whole time. Given a choice between that and Planet 51 he chose the former. good boy
